What is the Lion Diet?

Lion Diet is a specific, more restrictive variant of the broader Carnivore Diet, and it was introduced, named, and popularized by Mikhaila Peterson, who has shared his experience extensively on social media and in his podcast.

Lion Diet is different from a traditional carnivore diet, in that it focuses only on ruminant, salt and waterNo other products, not even typical animal products like eggs, pork, poultry, cheese, cream, or other dairy products.

The reason Mikhaila Peterson called it the “Lion Diet” was to draw a parallel to how lions, as apex predators, eat in the wild. Lions, she explains, eat mainly meat from large prey, and they have no need, or inclination, to eat any other animal products except the very best from their prey. They eat the very best, leaving the rest for scavengers.

Why Lion Diet?

Mikhaila Peterson's decision to call it Lion Diet, beyond the obvious reference to the lions' eating habits, was also deeply personal. Peterson has struggled with various autoimmune diseases and health issues throughout his life, including depression, anxiety, and physical ailments.

She found that when she limited her diet to just beef, salt, and water, her symptoms improved significantly. The simplicity of the diet allowed her to eliminate many potential food triggers that may have caused her health problems, while still getting all the nutrients her body needed from a single animal source.

In her narrative, she suggests that by simplifying the diet to this extreme level, the greatest health benefits can be achieved, especially for people suffering from complex, chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease.

The idea is that this strict approach, not only by removing all plant material that we know has toxins, but to also remove animal food that could cause problems for us.

Differentiation from the Carnivore Diet

Carnivore Diet is much broader in scope, allowing all animal products such as beef, chicken, pork, fish, eggs, and dairy. The diet has great flexibility in terms of what types of meat and animal products can be included.

A carnivore diet can potentially and theoretically include absolutely everything from the animal kingdom, on land and in water and in the air alike. The diet is simply about eliminating plant-based foods to focus exclusively on animal foods, but does not have the same strict restrictions as Lion Diet.

Lion Diet is thus far more restrictive, and a subcategory of its own. Its proponents argue that simplicity – beef, salt and water – is the key to allowing the body to work in peace with healing and achieving optimal health.

This stricter approach is seen as a form of an “elimination diet,” where potential allergens and inflammation-causing foods are completely removed, allowing the body to reset and heal before anything else is reintroduced.

In contrast, gives Carnivore Diet a wider variety of foods, which can introduce more complexity when it comes to figuring out what may cause sensitivities or exacerbations in certain individuals.

Key features of Lion Diet:

  • Simplicity: Only ruminants, salt and water – nothing else.
  • Focus on healing: Popular among those with autoimmune disease, depression, and other chronic health problems.
  • The apex predator principle: The diet is named to mimic the eating habits of top predators like lions, who eat meat from their prey, without needing any plant or animal foods outside of that.
  • Extreme elimination: Eliminating all foods except beef, salt, and water is intended to identify food sensitivities and reduce inflammation.
  • Health benefits: Mikhaila Peterson and others who have followed the diet report benefits such as improved mental clarity, reduced autoimmune inflammation, and weight loss.
  • Lenten-like: This diet is approaching purity as in a fast, and the body has very few digestive problems, and added problematic substances (including plant toxins) to deal with.

Summary

Lion Diet represents a very focused and restrictive subset of the broader Carnivore Diet, aimed at those seeking a deeply simplified and controlled diet.

Men Carnivore Diet is already quite strict compared to regular diets, taking Lion Diet It goes a step further by limiting the foods to only beef, salt, and water. For those struggling with complex health issues, especially autoimmune disease, Mikhaila Peterson's offers Lion Diet a healing approach that has resonated with a niche group looking to reset their health.
